Lag B'Omer

Joyful day in the Jewish Calendar

Lag B’Omer, the 33rd day of the Omer count, is a joyful day in the Jewish calendar that falls on the 18th of Iyar. It marks the end of a tragic period during which 24,000 students of Rabbi Akiva died in a plague. This day also commemorates the passing of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, a renowned sage and mystic who revealed the secrets of the Kabbalah and requested that the day of his passing be celebrated with joy.

Lag B’Omer is celebrated with outdoor activities, such as bonfires, parades, and picnics. These bonfires symbolize the spiritual light that Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai brought into the world through his teachings. Many Jewish communities also participate in archery and other outdoor sports, reflecting the historical significance of the day as a time of Jewish resilience and strength.

At Chabad Neshama Jewish Center, we celebrate Lag B’Omer with a lively community event, including a bonfire, music, and a barbecue. We invite everyone to join us for this day of joy and unity, as we come together to celebrate the teachings of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and the enduring spirit of the Jewish people.
